YarhamukALLAH Meaning-A Response to Science of Sneeze
Sneezing in Islam is a blessing we will further discuss logically and scientifically. It’s a sign of good health, a sound immune system, and a physically fit person.
People at the time of Prophet Mu’hammad sallALLAHu ‘Alayhe Wasallam were unaware of this scientific fact that the human body immune response towards the germs, viruses, irritants that results in sneezing.

For this reason, the one who sneezes should thank ALLAH by saying ‘Alhamdulillah‘. That’s the dua for sneezing which means all praise be to ALLAH.
Whereas, there is a response to the one who is sneezing that is by saying ‘yarhamukALLAH‘ that means may ALLAH have mercy upon you!
In return when the one who sneezes hears the companion’s response to his sneeze should say ‘yahdikumullah wa yuslihu baalakum‘. The meaning of this may ALLAH guide you and improve your condition.

As many-a-times the irritant might not get discharged through the very first sneeze. And it takes several sneezes to wipe out. There are a lot of people who sneeze due to allergies. They also need a few sneezes to clean the passage.
I Sneeze Just Once or Twice in a Queue?
Those who sneeze once or twice need not worry about that. This is the sign their passage gets cleaned in just one or two sneezes.
Why Thanking ALLAH?
There is no doubt that humans are created by The Only one God that is ALLAH Subhanahu Wata ‘Ala. Humans should thank ALLAH as often as they can.
However, it’s a fact, indeed, that no human can thank ALLAH for the blessings HE has granted.
The logic behind thanking after sneezing in Islam.
When we sneeze we release thousands of germs. Obviously, cannot be seen by our naked eyes. These germs were incarcerated within our whole body, head, lungs including the nasal passageway. These germs are harmful which results in pain and sickness of the body.
Consequently, we thank ALLAH for this blessing which accommodated us to remain healthy. I hope you will love to read this→ Dua To Cure And Reduce Fever
Sneezing, Normal or you got a Cold?
To know this let us read one of the lovely Hadith.
It was narrated from Ilyas bin Salamah bin Akwa’ that his father said:
“The Messenger of ALLAH ﷺ said: ‘The one who sneezes may be responded to three times; if he sneezes more than that, he has a cold.'”
Sunan Ibn Majah 3714 | Grade : Saheeh (Darussalam)
Malik related to me from Abdullah ibn Abi Bakr from his father that the Messenger of ALLAH, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said,
“If a man sneezes, invoke a blessing on him. Then if he sneezes, invoke a blessing on him. Then if he sneezes, invoke a blessing on him. Then if he sneezes, say, ‘You have a cold’.” Abdullah ibn Abi Bakr said, “I don’t know whether it was after the third or fourth.”
Muwatta Malik
Narrated Abu Hurayrah Radi ALLAHu ‘Anhu:
Respond three times to your brother when he sneezes, and if he sneezes more often, he has a cold in his head.
Sunan Abi Dawud 5034
Duas for Sneezing According to Hadith
The one who is sneezing should say ‘Alhamdulillah’ after sneezing. Meanwhile, the one who hears should say ‘yarhamukALLAH’.
Narrated Abu Hurairah Radi ALLAHu ‘Anhu:
The Prophet ﷺ said, ” If anyone of you sneezes, he should say ‘Al-Hamduli l-lah’ (Praise be to ALLAH), and his (Muslim) brother or companion should say to him, ‘Yar-hamuka-l-lah’ (May ALLAH bestow his Mercy on you). When the latter says ‘Yar-hamuka-llah”, the former should say, ‘Yahdikumul-lah wa Yuslih balakum’ (May ALLAH give you guidance and improve your condition).
Saheeh al-Bukhari 6224
Narrated Anas bin Malik Radi ALLAHu ‘Anhu:
Two men sneezed before the Prophet. The Prophet sallALLAHu ‘Alayhe Wasallam said to one of them, “May ALLAH bestow His Mercy on you,” but he did not say that to the other. On being asked (why), the Prophet sallALLAHu ‘Alayhe Wasallam said, “That one praised ALLAH (at the time of sneezing), while the other did not praise ALLAH.”
Saheeh al-Bukhari 6221
How Many Times to Say YarhamukALLAH?
When someone sneezes it is now known that you should say ‘YarhamukALLAH’. Ain’t you ask how many times?
This Hadith will answer this question:
Narrated ‘Umar bin Ishaq bin Abi Talhah:
from his mother, from her father, who said: “The Messenger of ALLAH sallALLAHu ‘Alayhe Wasallam said: ‘Reply three times to the sneezing person. If he (sneezes) more, then if you wish reply and if you do not then do not.'”
Jam’i At-Tirmidhi 2744 | Grade : Da’eef (Darussalam)
Please be noted that the Hadith mentioned above is daeef which means weak.
Sneezing is Tashmeet that means a gift of ALLAH to us.
The one who sneezes shows that his body is healthy with a sound immune system. The entire process of sneezing including saying duas by oneself and others. This annoys shaitan.
Shaitan gets upset when a believer praises and thanks to ALLAH Subhanahu Wata ‘Ala.

As you already have read that sneezing release germs within the vapor from our body. Being harmful, when these burst out from our mouth and nose. We should take care that we are not sneezing on others by transmitting these germs to other fellows.
This is a scientific fact. Sneezing may spread germs.

How much a Sneeze should be Audible?
Prophet sallALLAHu ‘Alayhe Wasallam keeps the sound of the sneeze as low as he can. We can observe in our society people tend to sneeze so loud willingly to enjoy the sneeze.
It sounds so funny! The degree of loudness is to this extent that even when the neighbor sneezes one can easily identify who is sneezing.
Be reminded that one should not control his sneeze as it could be dangerous.
Narrated Abu Hurairah Radi ALLAHu ‘Anhu:
that when the Prophet (ﷺ) would sneeze, he would cover his face with his hand or with his garment, and muffle the sound with it.
