The full dua is La Ilaaha IllALLAH Mu’hammadur-Rasoolullah

English Meaning:

There is no God but ALLAH Mu’hammad is the Messenger of ALLAH.

ALLAH ke siwa koi ma’abood nahi Muhammad (ﷺ) ALLAH ke Rasool Hai.

The Arabic word ‘La’

The Arabic word ‘La’ is a negative particle. In Arabic, we say it Harf-e-Nafi which means expressing negation or refusal or denial of something.

The one who utters the word ‘La’ which means ‘there is no’ denies it.

The Arabic word ‘Ilaaha’

The Arabic word ‘Ilaaha’ is an accusative masculine singular noun that denotes God. In Arabic, we say it ‘Ism-e-Mansoob’. Upon which the verb is acted upon. For i.e. we are denying is a verb.

The one who utters the word ‘La Ilaaha’ which means ‘there is no God’ also denies that there is no God with all his belief.

The Arabic word ‘Illa’

The Arabic word ‘Illa’ is a restriction particle. In Arabic, we say it ‘Adaat Hasar’ which means restricting or limiting. The one who says this is limiting himself to only one God which is ALLAH.

The Arabic word ‘ALLAH’ is a nominative proper noun. That is used as the subject of a verb. In Arabic, we say it ‘Lafz Al-Jalaalah Marf’oo’. The one says this is accepting that the nominative proper noun that is ALLAH here is the only God.

The one who utters the word ‘La Ilaaha Illa-ALLAH’ which means ‘there is no God but ALLAH’ denies that there is no God and believed the fact that ‘except’ ALLAH.

Virtues and Benefits of La Ilaha IllALLAH

It was narrated that Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of ALLAH ﷺ said:

‘urge your dying ones to say La ilaha illALLAH.”

Sunan Ibn Majah 1444 | Grade : Saheeh (Darussalam)

Narrated Ibn ‘Umar:

that the Messenger of ALLAH ﷺ said:

“Islam is based upon five: the testimony of La Ilaha IllALLAH, and that Mu’hammad is the Messenger of ALLAH, the establishment of the Salat, giving the Zakat, fasting (the month of) Ramadan, and performing Hajj to the House.”

Jam’i At-Tirmidhi 2609 | Grade : Saheeh (Darussalam)

Narrated Abu Hurairah Radi ALLAHu ‘Anhu:

that the Messenger of ALLAH ﷺ said: “Faith has seventy-some odd doors, the lowest of which is removing something harmful from the road, and its highest is the statement ‘La Ilaha IllALLAH.'”

Jam’i At-Tirmidhi 2614 | Grade : Saheeh (Darussalam)

Narrated Anas bin Malik Radi ALLAHu ‘Anhu:

that regarding ALLAH’s saying: We shall certainly call all of them to account. For all that they used to do (15:92 & 93). The Prophet ﷺ said: “About saying La Ilaha IllALLAH.”

Jam’i At-Tirmidhi 3126 | Grade : Da’eef (Darussalam)

It was narrated from Mu’adh bin Jabal that the:

Messenger of ALLAH ﷺ said: “There is no soul that died bearing witness to La ilaha illALLAH, and that I am the Messenger of ALLAH, from the heart with certainty, but ALLAH will forgive it.”

Sunan Ibn Majah 3796 | Grade : Hassan (Darussalam)

Narrated At-Tufail bin Ubayy bin Ka’b:

from his father, from the Prophet ﷺ (regarding this Ayah): ‘And made them stick to the word of Taqwa (48:26).’ He ﷺ said (the word is): “La Ilaha IllALLAH.”

Jam’i At-Tirmidhi 3265 | Grade : Hassan (Darussalam)

It was narrated that Abu Hurairah Radi ALLAHu ‘Anhu said:

“The Messenger of ALLAH ﷺ said: ‘Faith has seventy-odd branches, the most virtuous of which is La ilaha illALLAH (there is none worthy of worship except ALLAH) and the least of which is removing something harmful from the road. And modesty (Al-Haya’) is a branch of faith.'”

Sunan An-Nasa’i 5005 | Grade : Saheeh (Darussalam)

It was narrated from Samurah bin Jundab that :

the Prophet ﷺ said: “(There are) four that are the best of words, and it does not matter with which you begin: Subhan-ALLAH, wal-Hamdu-Lillah, wa la ilaha illALLAH, wa Allahu Akbar (Glory is to Allah, praise is to Allah, none has the right to be worshiped but ALLAH and ALLAH is the Most Great).”

Sunan Ibn Majah 3811 | Grade : Saheeh (Darussalam)

It was narrated from Hudhaifah bin Yaman that the Messenger of ALLAH ﷺ said:

“Islam will wear out as embroidery on a garment wears out, until no one will know what fasting, prayer, (pilgrimage) rites and charity are. The Book of ALLAH will be taken away at night, and not one Verse of it will be left on earth. And there will be some people left, old men and old women, who will say: “We saw our fathers saying these words: ‘La ilaha illALLAH ’ so we say them too.”

Silah said to him:

“What good will (saying): La ilaha illALLAH do them, when they do not know what fasting, prayer, (pilgrimage) rites and charity are?” Hudhaifah turned away from his. He repeated his question three times, and Hudhaifah turned away from him each time. Then he turned to him on the third time and said: “O Silah! It will save them from Hell,” three times.
